Bio identical hormone replacement and supplementation therapy
It is said that we age as our hormones decline, not the other way around.
There is increasing understanding of how hormonal imbalance causes accelerated aging of our skin, our thinking processes and impairs our overall well-being. Most of us who have experienced menopause or have a loved one going through it will know how there is a rapid onset of aging changes in the face and body soon after the menopause. It is not just about the hot flushes – it is about overall aging.
Both men and women may benefit from bio-identical hormone replacement and supplementation therapy (BHRT). Hormone balancing treatment can provide relief from most of the symptoms experienced during the menopause. And it is not just for the menopause, but also for the andropause in men.
Other hormone-related conditions that are known to improve with hormone balancing treatment include premenstrual syndrome (PMS), postnatal depression, endometriosis and menstrual problems.
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is not the same as conventional HRT. The chemical structure of Bio-identical hormones is the same as the naturally occurring hormones we produce in our bodies. Bio-identical hormones are derived from diosgenin, a substance which is sourced from Mexican yams. Because they are completely identical in their chemical structure to our own hormones, their effects and benefits are very similar to what we would expect from our own hormones.
Bio-identical hormones can therefore be very beneficial to patients who have a hormone imbalance or have previously tried other hormonal medications, including HRT, and experienced unwanted effects.
Some commonly prescribed hormones, their uses and side effects
Estrogens are a class of female reproductive hormones, of which estradiol and estriol are the most commonly prescribed. Estrogens are responsible for the development and maintenance of the female reproductive system.
Estrogen deficiency can lead to unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flushes, insomnia and mood swings. Estrogens may be protective against osteoporosis, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Side effects of estrogen supplementation may include bloating, headache, breast tenderness. In some cases irregular bleeding or spotting may occur.
Progesterone is the “pro-gestation” hormone. It is produced in the female body after ovulation. It is also produced by the placenta during pregnancy.
Progesterone has many therapeutic uses, including the treatment of abnormal periods, improving mood, improving restful sleep, and protecting against the proliferative effects of estrogens on the uterus.
Side effects of progesterone supplementation may include spotting, missed periods, erratic bleeding, drowsiness, headaches, nausea and breakthrough bleeding.
Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and also an anabolic steroid hormone. Both men and women produce testosterone.
In men, testosterone is used to treat hypogonadism. It is often used to help improve libido in women.
Side effects may include acne, hirsutism, clitoral engorgement, voice change and increase in red blood cells.
A drop in DHEA levels is associated with the effects of aging over a person’s lifetime. DHEA may be effective in treating a wide range of symptoms associated with aging and menopause. Supplementation with DHEA may restore a person’s vitality and energy.
Side effects of DHEA are similar to those of testosterone, including acne and in rare cases, unwanted hair growth.
Pregnenolone is a precursor to many hormones. It also functions as a neurotransmitter in the nervous. It is thought to help maintain good memory.
Pregnenolone supplementation is used to enhance and maintain good memory.
Side effects of pregnenolone supplementation may include oily skin or hair.
Melatonin is a hormone with regulates our sleep patterns. A deficiency of melatonin may result in poor quality of sleep or insomnia.
Melatonin is used to regulate and improve sleep patterns. It may also ease anxiety.
Side effects of melatonin supplementation may include drowsiness and sometimes vivid dreams.
