Blood Testing

Blood tests are sometimes required for general health screening, and also to diagnose, or monitor diseases. In some cases blood tests are required to have a baseline level prior to starting a course of treatment (hormone replacement therapy) or deciding your suitability for a course of treatment (weight loss prescriptions for example).

Blood test samples can be taken in clinic as required for your appointment, and the doctor will discuss the results with you.

While some tests use fingerprick samples for you to take at home, these can be cumbersome and painful to perform on yourself. They can be used for those tests that require the tiniest amounts of blood such as glucose levels.

For hormone and nutrition assessments, venous samples such as those done at your NHS GP surgery are ideal. You can have blood tests carried out privately, and the results will be shared with your GP for inclusion in your medical record.

Depending on your medical history and information obtained at consultation, your doctor will select the most appropriate tests that will have an effect on your management.
Unless a diagnostic test is relevant and will have an impact on how you are managed, it is not advisable to carry out a test (don’t do a test “just because”).
